Our helicopter tour offers an experience like no other. It allows you to see the amazing island, in a way unimaginable from the ground. You’ll circumnavigate it and get excellent aerial views of the prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his incarceration. Below, you’ll see the stunning deep blue and green hues of the Atlantic Ocean stretching towards the horizon interrupted with the white crest of waves and a random group of dolphins.

Interesting Facts About Robben Island

• Aside from Nelson Mandela, other well-known inmates of the island include South African president Jacob Zuma and Kgalema Motlanthe.
• The Kramat or holy shrine you’ll find here is dedicated to the Cape’s first chief imam who was imprisoned in Robben Island for 13 years, and Pangeran Chakra Deningrat, the Prince of Madura, who died in the island in 1754.
• In 1690, convict Jan Rykman successfully swam the icy water and treacherous rocks of the island to reach the mainland.
• The island that used to be a part of the mainland is really a mountain peak. 
• You’ll find around 132 bird species here including Black Crowned Night Herons,  Crowned Cormorants, and the African Penguins.
